Fraud Warning: Account Takeover Scams

1st Mississippi Federal Credit Union has issued a warning to members after a recent increase in account takeover scams that have resulted in stolen funds.

The credit union reports that several members have been affected in recent days, with scammers gaining unauthorized access to accounts and withdrawing money. These account takeovers are often carried out using personal information stolen through phishing emails, fraudulent phone calls (vishing), or deceptive text messages (smishing). Cybercriminals may also purchase this information on the dark web following data breaches.

Once they gain access, fraudsters can change contact details, request PIN changes, and alter security settings to bypass fraud detection systems.

Members are urged to remain vigilant and cautious when contacted about their accounts. The credit union’s legitimate fraud department sends alerts using the short text code 37268. Any messages or calls from the fraud department will not be from a (601) number and should be treated as suspicious.

If members receive alerts about transactions they do not recognize, they should respond by replying "no" and immediately call the credit union at 601-693-6873. They are advised not to interact with any unverified calls, texts, or emails and to avoid clicking on any links or calling numbers included in suspicious messages.

The credit union recommends that members avoid sharing personal information online. If there is ever uncertainty about a transaction or communication, it’s best to hang up or ignore the message and contact the credit union directly.
